5 Tips You Need to Know Before Your Hair Braiding Appointment

Whether you are planning on getting box braids, two braids, cornrows or any other hair braiding style, you need to know these 5 tips before your hair braiding appointment. If you are more of a visual person, you can watch the Youtube video associated with this content by clicking below. Otherwise, you are welcome to read on.

Tip #1 Know You Braider

If you don’t have a preferred hair braider, someone who you already trust with braiding your hair, or if you travel to a new city where you don't know any braiders, I would suggest that you do some research to find the best hair braider in your area. To do this, go on Google and type in “braiders near me” or “braiders in [the name of the city]”. For example, I live in San Juan, and if you lived here or if you were traveling here, you should type in the Google search bar “braiders in San Juan''. Google will give you a list of suggestions for the braiders in your area. You should check out this list, check out their reviews, and their photos, and if they have a website check out their website as well. When you are on their site, get a feel of how professional their website looks, and notice if they provide links to their social media or phone number. If they do have a phone number, call them and see how friendly they sound. If you find access to their Instagram Page, check it out. Notice if they have recent posts and if they respond to users’ comments. Also, I would DM them to see how fast they respond and if they are eager to answer any questions.

I will be posting a different article that contains more detailed information on how to pick the best hair braider.

Tip #2 Decide what hairstyle you want

If you want to get braids but you don’t know what particular style you want, you could start by finding out what hairstyles your braider provides and their prices. Also, you can go on things like Pinterest or Instagram to get ideas that will inspire you to choose a style for your braids. If you happen to find a picture that can serve as a reference for the hairstyle you want, show it to your hair braider as this will tell them exactly what you want to get done and what to do with your hair when you arrive for your hair braiding appointment.

Tip #3 Book ahead of time

As a hair braider, I can tell you that our schedules are generally very busy and walk-ins are hardly possible sometimes. I recommend that you book your appointment ahead of time, reach out to your braider to find out what their schedule looks like, and find a day and time that works best for you. Be aware that hair braiding takes time, so make sure that you are free from any other responsibilities on the day of your appointment. Remember braiding is an art that is being done in your hair and you should never rush the artist.

Tip # 4 Wash Your Hair

We love when clients come to their appointment with their hair ready to be braided: this means that your hair is clean and dry. Also, most braiders don’t offer a hair washing service, and the ones that do offer this service may charge you a fee. Moreover, if you show up to your hair braiding appointment with your hair washed and dry you may save time as your braider can get straight to business and start braiding your hair right away.

For people who have curly hair like mine or even curlier (see picture above), I would suggest that you stretch your hair with a blow dryer and a brush before your appointment.

Tip #5 Be on time for your appointment

Last but not least, be on time for your appointment! This is probably the most important tip. It’s possible that your braider has another client right after you and they just can’t afford to have you come in late. If you are not on time, you may miss your appointment, and what's worse may loose your deposit if you paid any. If you know you are going to be late because of an emergency or any tough situation, contact your braider right away. Let them know you are going to be late and ask them if you can still come in or if you can reschedule your appointment.
