Bye-bye Braids: How To Remove Your Box Braids

Video Transcripts:

Hi guys, my name is Vanessa. Welcome to the Sunny Braids YouTube Channel. For those who don’t know what Sunny Braids is, it’s an African Hair Braiding Salon in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After wearing my box braids for 5 weeks, I felt like it was time to take them down. I decided to record the process because many of my clients frequently ask me how they can remove their braids. The process is simple but it requires patience as it takes time. In this video, I demonstrate 3 different ways to undo your box braids.

What You’ll Need:

  • Pair of scissors

  • Braiding comb

To begin, I’m going to cut the ends of my braids to speed up the process. I will cut at least two to three inches below where my hair stops so I don’t accidentally cut my own hair. If you are not sure where your hair ends, you can skip the cutting part and start undoing your braids from the ends until you get to the roots.

Instead of cutting multiple braids at once, I choose to be extra careful and cut each braid individually to make sure that I don’t end up cutting my own hair. Once I’m done cutting the ends of my braids, I will proceed with undoing each braid.

First method: Pintail Picking

For the first method, I’m using my braiding comb. With the pintail, I will pick the braid where each strand of hair intersects to unravel it. Here you can see more clearly how I’m picking each intersection with the pintail. This method is perfect if someone else is helping you or if you prefer using a comb rather than your fingers or nails.

Second method: Finger Picking

For the second method, you only need your own hands. I’m essentially doing the same thing I did in the first method, the difference is that I am using my index fingers to pick where the strands of the braid intersect to undo the braid. I keep working my way up until the root until the braid is fully removed. This method is perfect if you don’t have a braiding comb or if you don’t mind using your own fingers.

Third method: Unbraiding

On the third method I am unbraiding the braid following the opposite pattern the braid currently has. If you know how to braid this method is great as it could allow you to remove your box braids really fast. Unbraiding is a great way to remove box braids if you already know how to braid.

I personally use a combination of all three methods when I undo my box braids. I hope that my clients and just anyone who gets box braids find this video useful and it helps you figure out how to remove your braids.
