They are lighter than box braids and take less time to create. And, like any other summer braid style, they keep the hair away from your face so it doesn’t get sticky!

The heat has damaging effects on your hair, particularly when the heat source is an electric appliance, such as a hair dryer or an iron. When your hair gets exposed to high temperatures, this changes the shape of its keratin strands: “Temperatures over 300°F convert the ⍺-keratin to β-keratin, which eventually leads to weaker hair that has lost its elasticity and become more prone to damage” (Dyson).

The first thing you’ll notice is that your hair lacks its natural moisture, it looks dull and lifeless. Sunrays cause the hair’s natural oils to evaporate and this can crack the hair cuticles, something that causes split ends and tangle. Your hair color may fade—yes, even your natural color! And as your hair loses its elasticity, when you detangle it you’ll notice a lot of breakage. In a few words, you may love those long, sunny days at the beach. But your hair? Not so much!

Protective hairstyles help you maintain humidity and keep the edges away from the sun. Plus, since your hair doesn’t get tangled, you won’t inadvertently break it when combing it or styling it. Having a summer braid hairstyle is a great way to prevent heat damage.

Why should you worry about the heat and the potential damage to your hair if you are traveling to Puerto Rico? Because, chances are, it’s going to be hot, hot, hot! Scientists classify the climate in Puerto Rico as tropical rainforest, which means it is never cold. Temperatures oscillate from warm to hot, although they change a little bit whether you find yourself close to the beach or in the mountains (we’ll see more about the hottest spots of the island later on).

In any case, the average temperature you may expect to find during your trip to Puerto Rico is between 76°F and 88°F closer to the coast, and a bit lower (73 to 78°F) in the mountains. Plus, you can expect high humidity all year long, which isn’t the best news for your hair if it gets frizzy! On the bright side, these high temperatures mean any moment of the year is great for visiting the beach.

Climate change has affected every region of the world, and Puerto Rico isn’t exempted. In the past few years, heat waves have become more frequent, and sometimes, the temperature of the island can rise over 100°F! For those of us with long, thick hair, this means we need to do something to protect ourselves from the heat, including a cool braided hairstyle. However, for all of us, it's advisable to drink plenty of fluids and to stay in cool places during the hottest times of the day.

While nobody looks forward to rainy days when you are enjoying a beach vacation, you’d better get used to the idea that you’ll get some of it during your stay. However, rains on the island don’t happen everywhere at once: If you are on the northern shore, you can hit the south part to escape those thick rain clouds. Most rains happen during the afternoon and don’t last long, so they aren’t likely to ruin your beach fun. Think of them as a break, enjoy an afternoon shopping, go to a bar and listen to live music, or get your hair braided!

Although you are likely to find warm to hot weather in every place on the island, some particular areas are known for their higher temperatures. According to the website Weather and Climate, the hottest places in Puerto Rico are Juana Díaz, Santa Isabel, Jayuya, Villalba, and Ponce. As you can see if you study a map of the island (something I find particularly interesting when planning a trip, by the way!), they are all located in the southern part of the island.

San Juan, the capital city of the island, one of its main tourist spots, and the location of the port where so many cruises arrive, usually has warm temperatures but not as scorching, thanks to the marine breeze that makes it all more pleasant.

Best Times to Visit Puerto Rico

So when is the best time to plan your trip to Puerto Rico, get yourself some cool summer braid styles, and enjoy a fantastic vacation? From December to mid-April, it’s the high season: You’ll find mild temperatures and fewer days of rain, which makes the weather perfect! Of course, the island is more crowded during these months: The hotels are full, you may need to wait in line when visiting some attractions or eating out, and if you want to have your hair braided, you’ll need to book your appointment beforehand.

My favorite time is from mid-April until June when you have the warmest weather! You won’t find so many tourists as in the high season, the temperatures are around 85°F, and it’s breezy and perfect to get a tan. Besides, something amazing you can do if you visit Puerto Rico during the summer is to see the Carey turtles hatching. It’s such an incredible experience!

June to November is known as the rainy season, and occasionally, we get a hurricane. This is quite rare, though. It doesn’t happen every year, and most times you can enjoy the beach several hours a day while spending half of the money during your stay than if you came during the high season. If you are on a tight budget, it’s worth considering!

Otra ventaja de este peinado veraniego es que las box braids duran varias semanas. Ten en cuenta que pueden ser un poco pesadas, por lo que no te recomiendo optar por este estilo si tienes el cuero cabelludo particularmente sensible.

• Twists: Este es otro peinado de verano popular para las niñas. En lugar del patrón clásico de tres mechones, los twists de cabello se crean con uno de dos mechones, lo que le da al peinado una textura y apariencia únicas. El calor tiene efectos dañinos en el cabello, especialmente cuando la fuente de calor es un aparato eléctrico, como un secador de pelo o una plancha. Los rayos del sol hacen que los aceites naturales del cabello se evaporen y esto puede agrietar las cutículas del cabello, algo que provoca puntas abiertas y enredos. El color de tu cabello puede desvanecerse; sí, ¡incluso tu color natural! Y a medida que tu cabello va perdiendo elasticidad, al desenredarlo notarás mucho quiebre. En pocas palabras, puede que a ti te encanten esos largos y soleados días de playa. ¿Pero a tu cabello? ¡No tanto!

Los peinados protectores te ayudan a mantener la humedad y mantener los bordes alejados del sol. Además, como tu cabello no se enreda, no lo romperás sin querer al peinarlo o desenredarlo. Tener un peinado trenzado de verano es una excelente manera de prevenir el daño por calor.

Aquí hay otras cosas que puedes hacer para proteger tu cabello de las altas temperaturas:

En cualquier caso, la temperatura promedio que puedes esperar encontrar durante tu viaje a Puerto Rico es de entre 76°F y 88°F más cerca de la costa, y un poco más baja (73 a 78°F) en las montañas. Además, puedes esperar mucha humedad durante todo el año, lo cual no es la mejor noticia para tu cabello si se encrespa. Si bien nadie espera con entusiasmo los días de lluvia cuando disfruta de unas vacaciones en la playa, será mejor que te hagas a la idea de que te tocarán durante tu estadía. Sin embargo, las lluvias en la isla no ocurren en todas partes al mismo tiempo: si estás en la costa norte, puedes ir a la parte sur para escapar de esas espesas nubes negras. La mayoría de las lluvias ocurren durante la tarde y no duran mucho, por lo que no es probable que arruinen tu diversión en la playa. Piensa en ellas como un descanso, la ocasión de disfrutar de una tarde de compras, ir a un bar y escuchar música en directo, ¡o trenzarte el pelo!

Los lugares más calurosos de Puerto Rico

Aunque es probable que encuentres un clima cálido o caluroso en todos los lugares de la isla, algunas zonas concretas son conocidas por sus temperaturas más altas. Entonces, ¿cuándo es el mejor momento para planificar tu viaje a Puerto Rico, conseguir algunos estilos geniales de trenzas de verano y disfrutar de unas vacaciones fantásticas? De diciembre a mediados de abril es la temporada alta: encontrarás temperaturas suaves y menos días de lluvia, ¡lo que hace que el clima sea perfecto! Por supuesto, la isla está más concurrida durante estos meses: los hoteles están llenos, es posible que tengas que hacer cola para visitar algunas atracciones o comer afuera y, si quieres que te trencen el pelo, tendrás que reservar tu cita con antelación.

¡Mi época favorita es desde mediados de abril hasta junio, cuando el clima es más cálido! No encontrarás tantos turistas como en temporada alta, las temperaturas rondan los 85°F y es ventoso y perfecto para broncearse. Además, algo increíble que puedes hacer si visitas Puerto Rico durante el verano es ver nacer las tortugas Carey. ¡Es una experiencia tan asombrosa!

De junio a noviembre se conoce como la temporada de lluvias y, ocasionalmente, tenemos un huracán. Sin embargo, esto es bastante raro. No ocurre todos los años, y la mayoría de las veces puedes disfrutar de la playa varias horas al día gastando la mitad del dinero durante tu estancia que si vinieras en temporada alta. Si tienes un presupuesto ajustado, ¡vale la pena considerarlo!
