Noche de San Juan: The Meaning
Saint John the Baptist is the only saint the Catholic Church celebrates on the day he was born instead of their death anniversary. Saint John washed away people’s sins in a river, and that’s why a key element of his celebration is water: The main tradition of Noche de San Juan is plunging backward into a body of water, mostly the ocean, but it can be a river, a lake, or even a swimming pool! You do it an uneven number of times (some people say three times, others seven…) to wash bad luck away and embrace good fortune for the following year. Another strong tradition of Noche de San Juan is to gather around a bonfire since it is believed that when Saint John was born, his arrival was a burning, shining light that prepared the world for the birth of Christ.
As you can see, it’s a widespread celebration among Christians, but if you don’t share the faith, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a great time. See, according to the Gospels, Saint John—who was related to Jesus—was born exactly six months earlier, on June 24th. This date overlaps with the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and, as it happens with Easter, the religious and the pagan holidays overlap. How to Party on June 23rd
If you stay in Puerto Rico for Noche de San Juan 2024, you will have the opportunity to participate in any of the celebrations that take place all over the island. People get together at the beach during sunset, wearing mostly white clothes. We dance, we eat, and we have a great time! Resorts and hotels organize their own celebrations as well. At midnight, you take the traditional plunges into the water to have good luck.

El 23 de junio marca el comienzo del verano y se conoce como Noche de San Juan. Al ser la noche más corta del año, es una ocasión para celebrar la luz y el renacimiento. Personas de muchas partes del mundo, como España, Portugal, Irlanda o Brasil, celebran la Víspera de San Juan (o Noche de San Juan), pero para Puerto Rico la ocasión es doblemente importante porque el santo da nombre a la capital de la isla.
La Noche de San Juan 2024 es domingo. Si estás planeando visitar Puerto Rico, tendrás muchas opciones para unirte a las celebraciones y rituales locales, ¡en una noche que siempre atesorarás en tu memoria!
