After all, your braids are likely to stay with you for several weeks, so you want to be sure you end up with a style you absolutely love.

1. What do their customers have to say?

How to find a new braider for you? The first thing you should do is ask someone whose hairstyle you admire. They could give you a referral to a local braider or a studio. Make sure they tell you not only about the price, but also about how they felt with their stylist, and whether they’d like to return.

You can also check for local braiders on social media to see their catalog (more on this later on). Finally, make sure you read the reviews. A thankful, satisfied customer will likely give their braider a detailed review. Besides, checking the reviews may allow you to notice how long this braider has been in business. Do they have multiple reviews, some older than six months? Or do they just have a couple? Having few reviews doesn’t mean they are not great—maybe they’re new in business—but having multiple, positive reviews is definitely a plus.

2. What’s their experience like?

A braider can be cool, professional, and charge a fair price, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re right for you. I said before you can check their profile on Instagram, Facebook, or their webpage. In fact, you should! Because, even if you love your friend’s hair, that doesn’t mean her style would suit you. 

Your braider should offer you a catalog of their previous work, and plenty of samples of different braiding styles for you to check out their skills and their previous experience. As a professional braider, I find that social media is not just for advertising, but part of openly communicating with current and future customers as well. And, speaking about that…

3. How are their communication skills?

Having a braiding session means you’ll spend several hours with this person. You need to feel comfortable around them, and you definitely need to speak up in case the braiding style is not coming up as expected, or if you experience pain or excessive tension during the braiding process. It’s a great idea to have a previous consultation before attending the session: This way, you can talk about your ideas on what you want in your hair, as well as listen to your braider’s suggestions. 

A good braider should tell you honestly if your hair type or conditions are not suitable for a specific braiding style, but they should also offer alternatives. You should feel comfortable with them! After all, you are likely to spend several hours together when they’re working on your new braids.

Make sure your braider encourages dialogue, asks you plenty of questions before the appointment so they are sure of what you really want, and is eager to get feedback during the braiding session. You should be able to tell your braider if something hurts! We can’t guess and we rely on your cooperation. It’s our job but it’s your hair: Think of a braiding session as teamwork! Therefore, make sure you feel comfortable during the consultation. If you find the braider intimidating, you won’t be able to tell them if something doesn’t feel quite right. And you should never leave the braiding studio feeling that you don’t like the way your hair turned out.3.

3 cosas que debes saber sobre tu trenzador

Me encanta ser una trenzadora profesional, y lo que más quiero en mi trabajo es que mis clientes terminen complacidos con un hermoso peinado que les quede bien y que resalte su individualidad. En Sunny Braids, mi estudio profesional de trenzado en San Juan, Puerto Rico, adoro recibir clientes regulares que regresan por mantenimiento o que buscan probar un estilo diferente, así como también asesorar a las personas que se vienen a trenzar el cabello por primera vez.

Si este es tu caso, ¡aquí tienes algunos consejos que te pueden resultar útiles! Te diré tres cosas importantes que debes saber sobre tu trenzadora antes de poner tu cabeza en sus manos. Después de todo, es probable que tus trenzas se queden contigo durante varias semanas, por lo que debes asegurarte de terminar la sesión con un estilo que te encante.

1. ¿Qué tienen que decir sus clientes?

¿Cómo encontrar un nuevo trenzador? Lo primero que debes hacer es preguntarle a alguien cuyo peinado admires. Podrían recomendarte un trenzador local o un estudio. Asegúrate de que te informen no solo del precio, sino también sobre cómo se sintieron con ese estilista y si les gustaría volver.

También puedes buscar trenzadores locales en las redes sociales para ver su catálogo (hablaremos sobre esto más adelante). Finalmente, asegúrate de leer las reseñas. Un cliente agradecido y satisfecho probablemente le dará a su trenzador una revisión detallada. Además, las opiniones te permiten ver cuánto tiempo ha estado en el negocio este trenzador. ¿Tienen múltiples reseñas, algunas de más de seis meses? ¿O solo tienen un par? Tener pocas reseñas no significa que no sean excelentes (tal vez sean nuevos en el negocio) pero tener múltiples reseñas positivas es definitivamente una ventaja.

2. ¿Cómo es su experiencia?

Un trenzador puede ser genial, profesional y cobrar un precio justo, pero eso no significa necesariamente que sea el profesional adecuado para ti. Antes mencioné que puedes revisar su perfil en Instagram, Facebook o su página web. De hecho, ¡deberías hacerlo! Porque, incluso si te fascina cómo quedó el pelo de tu amiga, eso no significa que su estilo te quede bien a ti.

El trenzador debe ofrecerte un catálogo de su trabajo anterior y muchas muestras de diferentes estilos de trenzado para que puedas verificar sus habilidades y su experiencia previa. Como trenzadora profesional, considero que las redes sociales no son solo para publicidad, sino también parte de la comunicación con mis clientes actuales y futuros. Y, ya que hablamos de eso…

3. ¿Cómo son sus habilidades de comunicación?

Apuntarte a una sesión de trenzado significa que pasarás varias horas con esta persona. Debes sentirse cómodo con ella y definitivamente debes poder hablar en caso de que el estilo no salga como te esperabas, o si experimentas dolor o tensión excesiva durante el proceso de trenzado. Es una gran idea tener una consulta previa antes de asistir a la sesión: De esta manera, puedes dar tus ideas sobre lo que quieres hacer con tu cabello, así como también escuchar las sugerencias de tu trenzador.

Un buen trenzador debe decirte con total honestidad si tu tipo de cabello o sus condiciones no son las adecuadas para un estilo de trenzado específico, pero también debe poder ofrecerte alternativas. ¡Deberías sentirte cómodo con él o con ella! Después de todo, es probable que pasen varias horas juntos mientras trabaja en tus nuevas trenzas.

Asegúrate de que tu trenzador fomente el diálogo, te haga muchas preguntas antes de la cita para que esté seguro de lo que realmente quieres y de que esté bien predispuesto para recibir comentarios durante la sesión de trenzado. ¡Deberías poder decirle a tu trenzador si algo te duele! No podemos adivinar y confiamos en tu cooperación. Es nuestro trabajo pero es tu pelo: Considera la sesión de trenzado como un trabajo en equipo. Por lo tanto, asegúrate de sentirte cómodo durante la consulta. Si te parece que el trenzador es intimidante, no podrás decirles si algo no se siente del todo bien. Y nunca debes salir del estudio sintiendo que no te gusta cómo quedó tu estilo.
