My Inspiration for Creating Sunny Braids

Every year, over a million tourists visit San Juan, Puerto Rico, and most of them arrive from cruise ships. People come to our island looking for beach fun, music, festivities, delicious food, and adventure in nature. Many of these tourists decide to get their hair braided to protect it from the elements—and look cool in their vacation pics with their braids in Puerto Rico!

While many braiders make a living offering braided hairstyles to this audience, there’s something special about Sunny Braids: It was born with the tourist public in mind. You see, I was once a little girl on vacation, struggling to get my hair braided on time!

As I’ve told you before, my inspiration came from childhood. Every time we went on family vacations to tropical spots in the Caribbean my hair needed to be braided. That was the only way of surviving the beach, sand, breeze, ocean saltwater, and playtime with my five brothers and not getting my hair extremely knotted to the point no one could ever detangle it!

Because I was a tourist back then, I can totally relate to them and their pain points:

• You want your hair braided fast, but you want the style to last all through your beach holiday.

• You see many options available, but because you aren’t a local you can’t easily tell professionals from amateurs.

• There are so many things to do in Puerto Rico you can’t waste a whole afternoon searching for hair studios—you need yours to be easily accessible.

Unlike other braiding places, Sunny Braids was specifically created to be a tourist attraction. When people come to San Juan and look for braids in Puerto Rico, they want a place that’s accessible and reliable. Hence, many of the business decisions I’ve made—from location to hairstyle list—reflect this. I set my studio in a tourist area and dedicated myself to mastering the most popular protective hairstyles for a beach vacation.

While most of my clients are tourists, I do have locals who are loyal customers and come consistently. I have a special place in my heart for these clients, since they know their way around the island and could easily pick any other braiding service—still, they come back every time!

As a kid, I was blessed with the opportunity to experience firsthand the importance of a good braided hairstyle when it comes to enjoying beach holidays. Through the years, I’ve worked hard to perfect my braiding skills and come up with a variety of creations, particularly tailored to suit a tourist audience. I’ve always kept in mind that tourists are looking for more than great braiding skills though, so I managed to make decisions concerning location, services, and energy vibes.

My vision of becoming a professional braider in my beloved San Juan came true because I made a plan out of it and followed every step. Now I’m ready to keep growing and want to expand my business to new levels! Como te he contado en otra ocasión, mi inspiración vino de mi infancia.
