Why Did I Start Sunny Braids?

Sometimes, a good hair day turns into a good day! Trust me: I know all about it. Here’s my story.

Back when I was a little girl, every single time I went on vacation, my hair became a topic of concern for my entire family. There would be no playing in the pool slides. No running on the beach chasing seagulls. No fun in the ocean waves. None of it was allowed until my hair was properly braided. Why? Because no one in my family, including me, found any pleasure in dealing with the knots and pain of detangling my hair once the sun was set, and it was time to style my hair and get ready to enjoy a delicious dinner at the resort buffet.

There were four of us growing up: My twin brother Victor, Kevin, and my other brother also named Victor (Side note: My dad’s name is Victor, my grandfather’s is Victor as well, and I was going to be named Victoria, I’ll tell you more about this in another blog). My dad is bald and my mom and stepmoms all have straight hair. Since I only have brothers and my parents didn't have any experience with kinky hair, dealing with my rebellious curls was a mystery for everyone.

My dad took us on several trips around beautiful beach spots in the Caribbean including Cancun, Punta Cana, Margarita Island, Morrocoy, Panama City, and Ocho Rios. I close my eyes and I still smell the fresh ocean, and hear the waves crashing on the white sands of my childhood days.

And still, all of that had to wait! Every time we went on vacation the first thing we needed to do was find a hair braider. I have so many memories of sitting in front of a beach with a local braider doing my hair and my brothers running around manifesting their impatience. They would periodically check on my hair progress and ask the braider how much longer it was going to take for my braids to be done. I felt impatient as well! But only once my hair was protected by a beautiful hair braiding style, we as a family felt ready to start a joyful vacation!

To make things even worse, don’t forget that this was back in the 90s when our culture was heavily influenced by European beauty standards, and having straight hair was the “true” definition of beauty. Things have changed for the better, and now lots of people of African descent embrace their beautiful and unique hair as part of their precious identity.

Fast forward a couple of decades. I’m used to handling my hair and it never stops me from having a great time at the beach, but I still remember how important it is! 

I know I got braids here I think they are cornrows. Kevin is taking a picture of me and my dad.

Recuerdos de mi niñez con trenzas

¿Por qué empecé Sunny Braids?

A veces, todo lo que necesitas para disfrutar a pleno del tiempo libre es tener bien el cabello. Créeme: sé exactamente de lo que estoy hablando. Esta es mi historia.

De pequeña, cada vez que nos íbamos de vacaciones con mi familia mi cabello siempre era un tema de preocupación para todos. No podía jugar en los toboganes de la piscina, ni correr por la playa persiguiendo gaviotas, ni divertirme entre las olas del mar. Todo eso estaba fuera de mi alcance hasta que mi cabello estuviera adecuadamente trenzado. ¿Por qué? Porque a nadie en mi familia, incluyéndome a mí, le gustaba lidiar con los nudos y el dolor de desenredar mi cabello después de la puesta del sol, cuando llegaba la hora de peinarme y prepararme para disfrutar de una deliciosa cena en el buffet del resort.

Nosotros éramos cuatro: mi hermano gemelo Víctor, Kevin y mi otro hermano que también se llama Víctor (Nota al margen: el nombre de mi padre es Víctor, el de mi abuelo también es Víctor, y yo iba a llamarme Victoria, contaré más sobre esto en otro blog). Mi papá es calvo y mi mamá y mis madrastras todas tienen el pelo lacio. Como solo tenía hermanos varones y mis padres no tenían ninguna experiencia con el cabello rizado… ¿cómo lidiar con mis rizos rebeldes? Era un misterio para todos.

Mi papá nos llevó a varios viajes por hermosas playas del Caribe, entre las que puedo nombrar Cancún, Punta Cana, Isla de Margarita, Morrocoy, Ciudad de Panamá y Ocho Ríos. Cierro los ojos y todavía puedo sentir el fresco aroma del océano y oír las olas estrellándose sobre las arenas blancas de mi niñez.

Y aún así, todo ello debía esperar. Cada vez que nos íbamos de vacaciones, lo primero que teníamos que hacer era encontrar un trenzador de cabello. Tengo muchísimos recuerdos de estar sentada frente a una playa con un trenzador local peinándome y mis hermanos corriendo y manifestando su impaciencia. Revisaban a cada rato el progreso de mi cabello y le preguntaban al trenzador cuánto tiempo más tardaría en hacerme las trenzas. Solo cuando mi pelo estaba protegido por un hermoso estilo de trenzado, ¡recién entonces nosotros como familia nos sentimos listos para comenzar unas felices vacaciones!

Para colmo, no nos olvidemos que esto ocurría en los años 90, cuando nuestra cultura estaba fuertemente influenciada por los estándares de belleza europeos y tener el cabello lacio era la definición "verdadera" de la belleza. Las cosas han cambiado para mejor, y en la actualidad muchas personas con ancestros africanos abrazan su cabello hermoso y único como parte de su preciosa identidad.

Saltemos un par de décadas de vuelta al presente. Ahora estoy habituada a manejar mi cabello y nunca es un impedimento para pasarlo bien en la playa, pero aún recuerdo cuán importante es.

Y así es como inicié Sunny Braids. Mi objetivo es ofrecer a todos los viajeros y turistas en Puerto Rico servicios de trenzado africano de cabello, para que así pasen menos tiempo preocupándose por su cabello y más tiempo disfrutando de sus merecidas vacaciones.
