3) Visit Old San Juan

One of the must-see San Juan attractions you definitely need to check out during your spring break in Puerto Rico is the historic district, Old San Juan (Viejo San Juan). Not only will you learn about the amazing history of Puerto Rico and its rich mixture of Spanish and Native inhabitants, but you’ll also enjoy the fantastic sights of a walled city and its colorful buildings, visit an old castle from the 16th Century, historic buildings from the 19th Century—which include a theatre and a cathedral, and witness the most amazing sunsets you’ve ever seen.

Among the landmarks you can’t miss are El Morro Castle (an impressive citadel built by the Spaniards which was never defeated), San Juan’s Cathedral (the second most ancient church built in the American continent), the Palmas Bastion, Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery, full of ancient legends and ghost stories; and Casa Blanca, the oldest residence of San Juan intended for the city’s first governor, Juan Ponce de León (who never got to live in it!)

While you are at it, you can also try different levels of rock climbing at Pico del Toro, the biggest park of its nature in the Caribbean, or the amazing Bull Maze. And if you want to party afterward, you’ll find music, food, drinks, and karaoke at the Arena Medalla. When my friend Nessé came to visit from LA last summer, we went Zip Lining at T-Mobile District. Let me tell you: We totally loved the experience! First, we tried three different lines which were in a sitting position. I felt totally comfortable during those first three lines. But when we got to the fourth one, which was the first line lying down, I felt very anxious as they wrapped me like a tamale and attached me to the line—something that made me feel completely vulnerable. Definitely, a must-try experience that will kill your ego and feed your soul.

7) La Placita (Santurce)

Another spot you must see in Santurce is La Placita. During the day, it’s a farmer's market where you can buy fruit, vegetables, drinks, and all sorts of edibles. In the evening, it becomes a stage for the local music scene: You can listen to a concert, dance, eat out, or enjoy some drinks in any of the pubs or cafes in the surroundings.

9) Lago Las Curias (Las Curias Lake)

Located in the Cupey neighborhood you can find an astounding artificial lake built to supply fresh water to the city. The dam dates from 1946, and the water of the lake comes from the river Piedras and the rain. What surprises the visitors is a huge round hole in the middle of the lake, used to keep the water at an appropriate level. Due to its shape, this empty cone is known as “La Trompeta” (the Trumpet).

Something worth noticing is that this lake became affected by the 2017 hurricane when it got covered in plants. Fortunately, the neighbors gathered their efforts to work as a team and save the lake. Today, you can see the lake at its best. Some of the activities you can enjoy are kayaking and taking a guided tour into the hole! In the meantime, you’ll see the amazing plant and animal life the lake hosts. And, speaking of nature…

10) Botanical Garden in Río Piedras

This educational and research center depends on the University of Puerto Rico. It hosts over 30,000 plant species, some of which are endangered. You can learn about native species and also enjoy bird-watching! Take a guided tour or a workshop, or simply walk and relax in nature. If you are exhausted after so many days of beach activities or you simply don’t feel like walking, you also have the choice to take a trolley.

The Botanical Garden is a great place for taking cool pics, exercising, or spending time with friends and family. My only advice is to bring your lunch! It’s a big place, you may get hungry, and there are no cafes inside.

Last year I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Botanical Garden and I can tell you it was one of the most grounding experiences. I got to learn about different species of plants and one of the species that caught my attention the most was the Morivivi plant [Mimosa Pudica]. When you touch this plant it closes.

11) Bike Tour Bici Caño

Last but not least, if you want a real perspective on social projects in Puerto Rico, you can take a bike tour with the folks from Caño Martín Peña. They will teach you about their works and efforts to showcase their history and economic struggles. 7) La Placita (Santurce)

Otro lugar que debes ver en Santurce es La Placita. Durante el día, es un mercado de agricultores donde se pueden comprar frutas, verduras, bebidas y todo tipo de comestibles. Por la noche, se convierte en un escenario de la música local: podrás escuchar un concierto, bailar, comer fuera o disfrutar de unas copas en cualquiera de los pubs o cafeterías de los alrededores.

9) Lago Las Curias

Ubicado en el barrio de Cupey puedes encontrar un asombroso lago artificial construido para abastecer de agua dulce a la ciudad. La presa data del año 1946, y el agua del lago proviene del río Piedras y de la lluvia. Pero lo que sorprende a los visitantes es un enorme agujero redondo en el centro del lago, que se utiliza para mantener el agua a un nivel adecuado. Por su forma, este cono vacío se conoce como “La Trompeta”.

Algo que vale la pena destacar es que este lago fue afectado por el huracán de 2017 cuando quedó cubierto de plantas. Afortunadamente los vecinos aunaron esfuerzos para trabajar en equipo y salvar el lago. Hoy puedes ver el lago en su máxima expresión. ¡Algunas de las actividades que puedes disfrutar son navegar en kayak y realizar una visita guiada al hoyo! Mientras tanto, verás la increíble vida animal y vegetal que alberga el lago. Y, hablando de naturaleza…

10) Jardín Botánico en Río Piedras

Este centro educativo y de investigación depende de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Alberga más de 30.000 especies de plantas, algunas de las cuales están en peligro de extinción. ¡Podrás aprender sobre especies nativas y también disfrutar de la observación de aves! Realiza una visita guiada o un taller, o simplemente camina y relájate en la naturaleza. Si estás agotado después de tantos días de actividades en la playa o simplemente no te apetece caminar, también tienes la opción de coger un trencito o una mini trolley.

El Jardín Botánico es un gran lugar para tomar fotografías geniales, hacer ejercicio o pasar tiempo con amigos y familiares. ¡Mi único consejo es que traigas tu almuerzo! Es un lugar grande, puede que te dé hambre y no hay cafeterías dentro.

El año pasado tuve la oportunidad de ser voluntaria en el Jardín Botánico y puedo decirles que fue una de las experiencias más profundas. Conocí diferentes especies de plantas y una de las que más me llamó la atención fue la planta Morivivi [Mimosa pudica]. Cuando tocas esta planta se cierra.

11) Tour en Bicicleta BiciCaño

Por último, pero no menos importante, si quieres una perspectiva real de los proyectos sociales en Puerto Rico, puedes hacer un recorrido en bicicleta con la gente de Caño Martín Peña.
