My First Electric Daisy Carnival Experience
Last May, fans of electronic music everywhere had the chance to attend a magnificent event: The Electric Daisy Carnival, also known as EDC, which takes place in Las Vegas and is the largest electronic dance music festival in America. Not only is it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy first-class DJs, performers, and unique art installations, but it’s also a huge event for braiders! In this article, I’ll tell you all about my firsthand experience at EDC and why you shouldn't miss the chance to attend music festivals.
A New Braiding Experience
I like electronic music, but the truth is that I’ve never attended such a huge event before. However, if you know me, you can tell I never miss out on chances to have a great time! So, when I first heard about the opportunity to braid hair at this festival in Vegas, I started researching it. I especially wanted to know more about the people who attend, their interests, and their taste in fashion.
And let me tell you, my first EDC experience was incredible! I discovered that this crowd thrives on a world of music, fantasy, and color. The most popular styles at these festivals are voluminous, heavy on colorful extensions, with shiny elements, and often bubbly. Everywhere you look, you see pink, red, purple, bright green… These preferences are a stark contrast to what I'm used to in my Condado, Puerto Rico studio. Here, my clientele is mostly beach lovers who prefer their natural hair. When they do choose extensions, they usually opt for natural shades of brown and blonde.
For EDC, I wanted the hairstyles to be an integral part of the party and music, reflecting the ravers' preferred look. I came up with a selection of seven festival braids that were sure to rule the night. Changing my usual braiding style and hairstyle selection for my potential clients was a challenge, but I felt I was up to the task. All I needed to do was change my mindset and train myself in advance.
Practicing for EDC
Although it was going to be a first for me, EDC has a long history. It was first organized by Stephen Hauptfuhr back in 1991 and later held by its current organizer, Insomniac, in 1997. From 2011 onwards, it became a three-day event to accommodate the massive attendance, including an on-site camping experience. EDC has not only grown in attendance but in impressiveness as well: It includes many attractions, such as a huge display of a world of three-dimensional superstructures, colorful, glow-in-the-dark environments, carnival rides, and LED-infused flora and fauna in the original intersection of nature and technology.
EDC is way more than a music festival! It’s a celebration of love, life, art, and music. I wanted each hairstyle to reflect this bright, vibrant environment with light, colors, and shine. I studied pictures of attendees from previous editions of the festival, knowing each year they set the bar higher when it comes to their looks. I spoke to some people, and they told me how they usually prepare their outfits, hairstyles, makeup, and accessories months in advance! For electronic dance fans, this event is the most important one of the year, and they want to make sure their looks reflect the party spirit they embrace.
Everywhere I looked, I saw these amazing braided hairstyles with bubbles, sparkles, and colors that matched the outfits. I knew every person I braided there considered it much more than a protective style—it was part of their identity! So I practiced these styles in my studio before heading to Vegas.
Although they seemed simple, they were challenging because I'm used to creating styles that are tight, use minimal weave (if any), or are simply on my clients' natural hair. While practicing these styles, I noticed that, since I was using a larger amount of extensions and making them bulkier, they required me to think differently and use different braiding techniques. I had to get out of my comfort zone, but it was totally worth it. I learned so much during those days! I also recorded videos of myself practicing these styles to provide training for the braiders I planned to recruit.
Traveling to Vegas
EDC hasn’t always been held in Las Vegas. Previous editions of the festival were hosted in California (San Bernardino, Long Beach, Tulare, and other locations), Texas, Colorado, Florida, and in other parts of the world, such as The Arena Fairgrounds in my dear San Juan, Puerto Rico. I hope this happens again! But this time, it was going to happen in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada. And I can’t think of a better location for those amazing light structures and interactive sets: They say you can even see the Neon City from space!
Many people get their EDC Las Vegas tickets weeks or even months in advance! I was lucky enough to get the chance to attend, but I had little time to pack. I traveled to Vegas on Tuesday morning and arrived very late that day. Before starting my braiding marathon, I needed to get some supplies, so my first stop was Beauty Supply Warehouse, and it was love at first sight! This store was like a hair product supermarket, and of course, they had prepared for the occasion.
In the store, I found they had organized aisles filled with different product categories, from accessories and braiding extensions to hair care products, colorful wigs, and more. Some of the brands I already knew, and some others were a total discovery! The prices were also extremely affordable compared to what I get on the island. I wish we had a store like this in Puerto Rico where I could find all the supplies I need for my hair-braiding business in one place.
Now that I’ve been to my first EDC, next time I’ll be ready with plenty of supplies in advance. I already know what to look for!

Braiding Ravers
As I mentioned before, the audience of EDC was very different from my usual clients in San Juan, Puerto Rico, but if I felt a bit shy at first, that feeling faded away as the first ravers arrived and trusted me with their hair. I absolutely loved this crowd! They were laid-back, friendly, and fun. Interacting with them and getting to know them was a true blessing. Based on some of the outfits—which are really sexy!—it surprised me to find such a diverse attendance. People of all ages, couples, families, there was something fun for everyone!
More than anything, these people adore color! So, if you ever consider braiding hair at an EDM festival, know that you'll be entering a very colorful and beautiful world. Out of my selection of festival braided styles, "Dancefloor Diva," "Rave Rapunzel," and "Wild Flower" were the three most popular. I’m so glad I practiced them beforehand! I feel it was a great start, but for my next music festival, I’m confident I’ll have even more options to offer. I can’t wait to come up with new creations! And so can you: Your imagination is the limit. In the meantime, one tip for fellow braiders: When you sign yourself up for the next edition of EDC or any music festival, braid as fast as possible because attendees don’t want to miss a single moment of the party! Additionally, the braiding experience can also be fun, engaging, and part of the event as long as you catch those same cool, positive vibes and share them with your clients, something quite easy to do if you ask me!
This year, as usual, EDC had an amazing lineup of artists, which included Dabin, Mitis, Nghtmre, Sarah Landry, Kasablanca, Zedd, Slander, Jon Casey, Subtronics, and literally hundreds of performers! There’s no way you can see every single one that you like, so you’d better study the lineup in advance and choose your favorite ones for each day. You will also discover new artists, so get ready to find your new favorites.
EDC Fun!
I know what you may be thinking by now: Is it worth going to such an exciting music event and only working all day? Well, I wouldn’t know what to tell you, you wouldn't expect me to go all the way to Las Vegas and not have my share of fun, would you? Fortunately, I had the opportunity to attend the festival on Sunday and got to dance and party with my boyfriend and his friends! I enjoyed braiding my own hair to become part of that unique, vibrant crowd I already got to meet as a braider.
And being in the gambling capital of the world, I had to take my chances and play a little poker, right? First-time luck is real, folks! I won $140 at the Oyo Hotel Casino, where I was staying. It was so much fun! However, if you are not a big fan of gambling, you can still have a wonderful time in Vegas, especially if you attend EDC. Mi primera experiencia en el Electric Daisy Carnival
El pasado mes de mayo, los fanáticos de la música electrónica de todo el mundo tuvimos la oportunidad de asistir a un magnífico evento: el Electric Daisy Carnival, también conocido como EDC, que se lleva a cabo en Las Vegas y es el festival de música electrónica más grande de Estados Unidos. No solo es una oportunidad única en la vida para disfrutar de DJs, artistas e instalaciones artísticas únicas de primer nivel, ¡sino que también es un gran evento para los trenzadores! En este artículo te contaré todo sobre mi experiencia en persona en EDC y por qué no deberías perder la oportunidad de asistir a festivales de música.
Una nueva experiencia de trenzado
Me gusta la música electrónica, pero la verdad es que nunca antes había asistido a un evento tan grande. Sin embargo, si me conoces, podrás ver que nunca pierdo la oportunidad de pasar un buen rato. Entonces, cuando escuché por primera vez sobre la oportunidad de trenzar el cabello en este festival en Las Vegas, comencé a investigarlo. Especialmente quería saber más sobre las personas que asisten, sus intereses y sus gustos en moda.
Y déjame decirte que ¡mi primera experiencia con EDC fue increíble! Descubrí que esta multitud bulle en un mundo de música, fantasía y color. Los estilos más populares en estos festivales son voluminosos, con muchas extensiones coloridas, con elementos brillantes y, a menudo, burbujeantes. Dondequiera que mires, ves rosa, rojo, morado, verde brillante… Estas preferencias contrastan marcadamente con lo que estoy acostumbrada en mi estudio de Condado, Puerto Rico. Aquí mi clientela son principalmente amantes de la playa que prefieren su cabello natural. Cuando eligen extensiones, suelen optar por tonos naturales de castaño y rubio.
Para EDC, quería que los peinados fueran una parte integral de la fiesta y la música, reflejando el look preferido de los ravers. Se me ocurrió una selección de siete trenzas festivas que seguramente dominarían la noche. Cambiar mi estilo habitual de trenzado y selección de peinado para mis clientes potenciales fue un desafío, pero sentí que estaba a la altura de la tarea. Todo lo que necesitaba hacer era cambiar mi forma de pensar y entrenarme con anticipación.
Practicando para EDC
Aunque iba a ser la primera vez para mí, EDC tiene una larga historia. Fue organizado por primera vez por Stephen Hauptfuhr en 1991 y luego realizado por su actual organizador, Insomniac, en 1997. A partir de 2011, se convirtió en un evento de tres días para dar cabida a la asistencia masiva, incluida una experiencia de campamento en el lugar. EDC no sólo ha crecido en asistencia sino también en esplendor: incluye muchas atracciones, como una enorme exhibición de un mundo de superestructuras tridimensionales, entornos coloridos que brillan en la oscuridad, atracciones de carnaval y luces LED que dan vida a una flora y fauna en una original intersección de naturaleza y tecnología.
¡EDC es mucho más que un festival de música! Es una celebración del amor, la vida, el arte y la música. Yo quería que cada peinado reflejara este ambiente brillante y vibrante con luz, colores y brillo. Estudié fotografías de los asistentes de ediciones anteriores del festival y supe que cada año ponen el listón más alto en lo que respecta a su apariencia. Hablé con algunas personas y me contaron cómo suelen preparar sus outfits, peinados, maquillajes y accesorios ¡con meses de anticipación! Para los fanáticos del baile electrónico, este evento es el más importante del año y quieren asegurarse de que sus looks reflejen el espíritu de fiesta que abrazan.
Dondequiera que mirara, veía estos increíbles peinados trenzados con burbujas, destellos y colores que combinaban con los atuendos. Sabía que todas las personas a las que trenzaba allí lo consideraban mucho más que un estilo protector: ¡era parte de su identidad! Así que practiqué estos estilos en mi estudio antes de dirigirme a Las Vegas.
Aunque parecían simples, fueron un desafío porque estoy acostumbrada a crear estilos ajustados, que usan una cantidad mínima de extensiones (si corresponde) o que simplemente se realizan con el cabello natural de mis clientes. Mientras practicaba estos nuevos estilos, noté que, como usaba una mayor cantidad de extensiones y las hacía más voluminosas, me exigían pensar diferente y usar diferentes técnicas de trenzado. Tuve que salir de mi zona de confort, pero valió la pena. ¡Aprendí mucho durante esos días! También grabé videos de mí misma practicando estos estilos para capacitar a los trenzadores que planeaba reclutar.
Viajando a Las Vegas
EDC no siempre se ha celebrado en Las Vegas. Las ediciones anteriores del festival se realizaron en California (San Bernardino, Long Beach, Tulare y otras localidades), Texas, Colorado, Florida y en otras partes del mundo, como The Arena Fairgrounds en mi querido San Juan, Puerto Rico. ¡Espero que esto vuelva a suceder! Pero esta vez iba a ocurrir en la capital mundial del entretenimiento, Las Vegas, Nevada. Y no se me ocurre mejor ubicación para esas increíbles estructuras de luz y decorados interactivos: ¡dicen que incluso puedes ver la Ciudad de Neón desde el espacio!
¡Muchas personas obtienen sus entradas para EDC Las Vegas con semanas o incluso meses de antelación! Tuve la suerte de poder asistir, pero tuve poco tiempo para hacer las maletas. Viajé a Las Vegas el martes por la mañana y llegué muy tarde ese día. Antes de comenzar mi maratón de trenzado, necesitaba conseguir algunos suministros, así que mi primera parada fue Beauty Supply Warehouse, ¡y fue amor a primera vista! Esta tienda era como un supermercado de productos para el cabello y, por supuesto, se habían preparado para la ocasión.
En la tienda, descubrí que tenían pasillos organizados llenos de diferentes categorías de productos, desde accesorios y extensiones trenzadas hasta productos para el cuidado del cabello, pelucas coloridas y más. Algunas de las marcas ya las conocía, ¡y otras fueron un descubrimiento total! Los precios también eran extremadamente asequibles en comparación con lo que obtengo en la isla. Ojalá tuviéramos una tienda como esta en Puerto Rico donde pudiera encontrar todos los suministros que necesito para mi negocio de trenzado de cabello en un solo lugar.
Ahora que he estado en mi primer EDC, la próxima vez estaré lista con muchos suministros por adelantado. ¡Ya sé qué buscar!
Trenzando Ravers
Como mencioné antes, la audiencia de EDC era muy diferente a mis clientes habituales en San Juan, Puerto Rico, pero si me sentí un poco tímida al principio, ese sentimiento se desvaneció cuando llegaron los primeros ravers y me confiaron su cabello. ¡Me encantó esta multitud! Eran relajados, amigables y divertidos. Interactuar con ellos y conocerlos fue una verdadera bendición. Basándome en algunos de los outfits, ¡que son realmente sexys!, me sorprendió encontrar una asistencia tan diversa. Personas de todas las edades, parejas, familias, ¡había algo divertido para todos!
¡Más que nada, estas personas adoran el color! Entonces, si alguna vez consideras trenzar el cabello en un festival de EDM, debes saber que entrarás en un mundo muy colorido y hermoso. De mi selección de estilos trenzados de festival, "Dancefloor Diva", "Rave Rapunzel" y "Wild Flower" fueron los tres más populares. ¡Me alegro mucho de haberlos practicado de antemano! Siento que fue un gran comienzo, pero para mi próximo festival de música, estoy segura de que tendré aún más opciones que ofrecer. ¡No puedo esperar a tener nuevas creaciones! Y tú también puedes inventar tus peinados: tu imaginación es el limite. Mientras tanto, un consejo para los compañeros trenzadores: cuando se inscriban en la próxima edición de EDC o en cualquier festival de música, ¡trencen lo más rápido posible porque los asistentes no querrán perderse ni un solo momento de la fiesta! Además, la experiencia del trenzado también puede ser divertida, atractiva y parte del evento siempre que captes esas mismas vibraciones geniales y positivas y las compartas con tus clientes, ¡algo bastante fácil de hacer si me preguntas!

No hay forma de que puedas ver todos y cada uno de los que te gustan, por lo que será mejor que estudies la programación con anticipación y elijas tus favoritos para cada día. ¡Diversión EDC!
Sé lo que quizás estés pensando ahora: ¿Vale la pena ir a un evento musical tan emocionante y pasártelo trabajando todo el día? Bueno, no sabría qué decirte, no esperarías que fuera hasta Las Vegas y no tuviera mi parte de diversión, ¿verdad? Afortunadamente, tuve la oportunidad de asistir al festival el domingo y pude bailar y divertirme con mi novio y sus amigos. Disfruté trenzándome el cabello para formar parte de esa multitud única y vibrante que ya conocí como trenzadora.
Y al estar en la capital mundial del juego, tenía que arriesgarme y jugar un poco al póquer, ¿verdad? ¡La suerte de principiante es real, amigos! Gané $140 en el Oyo Hotel Casino, donde me hospedaba. ¡Fue muy divertido!
