5 Reasons I Switched to a Solid Shampoo Bar—And Why You Should Try It Too!

When my friend Vanessa published tips about essential hair care products a few weeks ago, I asked whether she ever tried solid shampoo. For me, it was a total game-changer! And no, in case you’re wondering, I don’t sell them for a living, it’s just that whenever I see such a great product I feel the urge to recommend it (it also happens to me with food recipes, baby wrapping, and other stuff by the way).

Besides, if you have a friend who is a hair expert, and you think some advice could help her out, you give her such a piece of advice! So here I’ll tell Vanessa (and you who are reading this) some reasons why you should give solid shampoo an opportunity. 

First, what is solid shampoo?

Known as solid shampoo, shampoo bar, or dry shampoo, it is an eco-friendly product made from concentrated, natural ingredients that allow you to keep your hair clean while reducing the amount of waste that goes into the water. Solid shampoo bars look basically like a bar of soap, only they are specifically made for washing the hair.

Here’s what makes this product so interesting in my opinion.

Reason #1: Protect the environment

Ever since I was young I’ve been concerned about environmental issues, and I do my best to reduce my carbon footprint and produce less waste. The solid shampoo seemed like an attractive concept in the first place because it uses no plastic (it comes wrapped in paper instead of bottled), it is not tested on animals (which makes it a vegan favorite), and most of the brands only use natural ingredients, such as olive oil, coconut butter, castor oil, rosemary, aloe, shea, and some essences. It uses no harsh chemicals such as sulfates, silicones, or colorants. Not only do you protect the environment, they are great for your health as well!

Reason #2: Easy to use

I used to spend long minutes in the shower rinsing my hair when I used traditional shampoo (maybe I used too much of it because I always got to play with foam and do fun hairstyles LOL). The first time I held a bar of shampoo, I thought it would take me forever to wash my hair. Guess what? It’s really simple! You can either rub the bar in your scalp as you’d do with body soap, or rub it between your hands to produce the usual foam and then wash your hair with it. The results are the same. Plus, it’s way easier to rinse and leaves no buildup!

Reason #3: Your hair lasts clean longer

I’ve always had straight, very thin hair, and during my teenage years, it was also quite greasy, so I needed to wash it every day. This caused my hair to fall, leaving it with still less volume. Once a hairdresser advised me to wash my hair less often but when I still used traditional shampoo, this meant my hair looked dirty and tangled only after a few days. Plus, as soon as the fragrance of the bottled shampoo vanished, I was concerned about my hair smelling dirty as well. 

Now I don’t know if it has something to do with a chemical ingredient or simply that my hair got used to it, but ever since I changed to solid shampoo, I only need to wash it twice a week. But the greatest thing is that during those non-shampoo days, it still looks clean! I choose a shampoo with no fragrance, but my hair no longer smells and I prefer it that way.

Reason #4: You save money

At first, I hesitated to buy a solid shampoo bar because it was more expensive than a commercial shampoo bottle (two or even three times as much!) But I’m glad I did! Because those little bars last for MONTHS. In the end, I spent less money than I did before. My children still use regular bottled shampoo (because it’s easier for them to apply by themselves) and I see how we need to recycle empty bottle after empty bottle while my little shampoo bar still lingers there.

The only precaution you need to take for it to last that long is to keep it somewhere dry: If you forget it next to the shower curtain or leave it in a soap holder with water in the bottom, it will get soft like any soap bar.

Although there are commercial brands available, you can find plenty of handmade solid shampoo bars made with love by entrepreneurs. I always choose to buy mine from some of them, to help people with their small businesses.

Reason #5: Convenient and easy to carry

If you like to pack light, you’ll find its small size and lightweight convenient for carrying your shampoo bar to your holidays and trips. I usually wash my hair at home, but recently I’ve started taking swimming lessons, so I take my shampoo bar to wash my hair afterward. Since it’s so small, it fits in a little pocket of my gym bag!

Cinco razones por las que me pasé al champú sólido (y por qué tú también deberías probarlo)

Cuando mi amiga Vanessa publicó unos consejos sobre productos esenciales para el cuidado del cabello hace unas semanas, le pregunté si alguna vez había probado champú sólido. A mí, ¡me cambió la vida! Y no, por si te lo estás preguntando, no me gano la vida vendiéndolos, pero cada vez que veo un producto tan bueno siento la necesidad de recomendarlo (por cierto, también me pasa con recetas, cargadores para bebés, y otras cosas).

Además, si tienes una amiga experta en cabello y crees que algún consejo podría ayudarla, ¿no se lo brindarías? Así que aquí le contaré a Vanessa (y a ti que estás leyendo esto) algunas razones por las que deberías darle una oportunidad al champú sólido.

Primero, ¿qué es el champú sólido?

Conocido como champú sólido, champú en barra o champú seco, se trata de un producto ecológico elaborado con ingredientes naturales concentrados que te permiten mantener tu cabello limpio y al mismo tiempo reducir la cantidad de residuos que terminan en el agua. Las barras de champú sólido se parecen básicamente a una pastilla de jabón, solo que están hechas específicamente para lavar el cabello.

En mi opinión, esto es lo que hace que este producto sea tan interesante.

Razón #1: Proteger el medio ambiente

Desde muy joven me preocupan los problemas ambientales y hago todo lo posible para reducir mi huella de carbono y producir menos residuos. El champú sólido me pareció un concepto atractivo en primer lugar porque no usa plástico (viene envuelto en papel en lugar de embotellado), no está probado en animales (lo que lo convierte en el favorito de los veganos) y la mayoría de las marcas solo usan ingredientes naturales, como aceite de oliva, manteca de coco, aceite de ricino, romero, aloe, karité y algunas esencias. No emplean productos químicos agresivos como sulfatos, siliconas o colorantes. ¡No solo proteges el medio ambiente, sino que también son excelentes para tu salud!

Razón #2: Fácil de usar

Solía ​​​​pasar largos minutos en la ducha enjuagándome el cabello cuando usaba champú tradicional (tal vez usaba demasiado porque siempre podía jugar con espuma y hacerme algunos peinados divertidos, jajaja). La primera vez que vi una barra de champú, pensé que me llevaría una eternidad lavarme el pelo. ¿Pero sabes qué? ¡Es realmente sencillo! Puedes frotar la barra en tu cuero cabelludo como lo harías con el jabón corporal, o fregarla entre tus manos para producir la espuma habitual y luego lavarte el cabello con ella. Los resultados son los mismos. Además, ¡es mucho más fácil de enjuagar y no deja residuos!

Razón #3: Tu cabello dura limpio más tiempo 

Siempre he tenido el pelo liso, muy fino y durante mi adolescencia también era bastante grasoso, por lo que necesitaba lavármelo todos los días. Esto me provocó bastante caída de cabello, dejándolo aún con menos volumen. Una vez, una peluquera me recomendó que lo lavara con menos frecuencia, pero cuando todavía usaba el champú tradicional, mi pelo se veía sucio y enredado solo después de uno o dos días. Además, tan pronto como la fragancia del champú embotellado desaparecía, me preocupaba que mi cabello también oliera sucio.

Ahora, no sé si tiene algo que ver con algún ingrediente químico o simplemente que mi cabello se acostumbró, lo cierto es que desde que cambié al champú sólido solo necesito lavarlo dos veces por semana. Pero lo mejor es que durante esos días sin champú, ¡sigue luciendo limpio! Elijo un champú sin fragancia, pero mi cabello ya no huele y lo prefiero así.

Razón #4: Ahorras dinero

Al principio, dudé en comprar un champú en barra sólido porque era más caro que una botella de champú comercial (¡dos o incluso tres veces más!) ¡Pero me alegro de haberlo hecho! Porque esas barritas duran MESES. Al final, gasto menos dinero que antes. Mis hijos todavía usan champú embotellado normal (porque les resulta más fácil aplicarlo solos) y veo que tenemos que reciclar botella tras botella mientras mi pequeña barra de champú todavía dura.

La única precaución que debes tomar para que dure tanto tiempo es guardarlo en un lugar seco: si lo olvidas junto a la cortina de la ducha o lo dejas en una jabonera con agua en el fondo, se ablandará como cualquier pastilla de jabón. .

Aunque existen marcas comerciales disponibles, puedes encontrar infinidad de champús sólidos en barra hechos a mano y con mucho cariño por emprendedores. Siempre elijo comprar el mío a alguno de ellos, para ayudar a la gente con sus pequeños negocios.

Razón #5: Cómodo y fácil de transportar

Si le gusta viajar liviano, su tamaño pequeño te resultará conveniente para llevar tu champú en barra a vacaciones y viajes. Normalmente me lavo el cabello en casa, pero recientemente comencé a tomar clases de natación, así que llevo mi champú en barra para lavarme el cabello después. ¡Al ser tan pequeño, cabe en un bolsillo de mi bolso de gimnasia!

¡Ahí lo tienes! Esta es mi experiencia con las barras de champú sólidas y la razón por la que nunca volveré a las botellas.
