First of all, how to tell them apart? Both are braiding styles. Cornrows are a style of braids that is braided very closely to the scalp, while box braids are loose braids consisting of square-shaped divisions (“boxes”).

Durability: How long do they last?

You should know that box braids generally last longer than cornrows. While you can keep box braids for about 2-4 weeks, you can typically keep your cornrows for 1-3 weeks. Thus said, your braids' durability heavily depends on how well you take care of them: if you protect them at night, how frequently you wash them, and the products you use to style them.

While at first, this may seem like an advantage to box braids, it’s not necessarily so: Perhaps you’re only trying on a new hairstyle, and you don’t care if it doesn’t last beyond your vacation!

This is another important fact, especially considering you need to book some time for your appointment. Cornrows are generally faster to create than box braids. If you are in a rush you can get 2 French braids which are essentially two cornrows and that will only take 30 minutes to create.

On the other hand, box braids take longer because there are far more hair divisions that need to be done. And your braider needs to take her time creating these divisions so the lines look clean. Don’t rush the process! You can still have a great time while having your hair braided. In my studio, we always chat and listen to cool music. You can also use the time to make a video call, watch an episode of your favorite series, or read.

Versatility: How to style them 

I must say that I love how versatile box braids are! You can wear your box braids in different hairstyles, like a bun, ponytail, half ponytail, etc. Of course, they depend on the length of your hair. Also, you can play with different hair divisions like triangles, diamonds, and wavy or zig-zag lines.

With cornrows, you can’t quite style the braids once they are made because these are braids that are really close to your scalp. However, you can get very creative with the design you chose.
