My Hair Nightmare Story
Since I was a kid, I’ve been paranoid of other people doing my hair. My mom—who has straight hair—was very impatient and was not gentle with my curly head. So I learned very early on that I had to be in charge of the situation because other people just couldn’t do it. 😒
That’s how I started braiding my own hair when I was only 8 years old. And I used to braid my twin brother’s hair as well. It was an excellent practice! Anyhow, ever since childhood, I’ve been very skeptical of who I trust with my hair. So I always style the hair myself. I can do my own box braids, I can straighten my hair, do hair treatments, and even trim my own ends. I don’t like people touching my hair, period! I wish I had learned that lesson well! I’ll tell you all about it in this post.

This past week, I had a photo shoot. I work as a hair braider from Wednesday through Sunday and the photo shoot was on Tuesday. I didn’t want to spend my whole Monday braiding my own hair, so I found a braider to do it (a part of me is pissed and wants to disclose her info so everyone knows who did it! But I know my furious feelings will pass and I will regret doing that as that may ruin her reputation, so I’m gonna chill for now! 😔😡)
I went to my appointment and she was very nice and pleasing. She played great music and she braided my hair really fast. One thing I noticed was the product she was using. She used KUUL FIX ME WAX GEL NATURAL LOOK. I asked about that product and made a comment saying that I use Shine ‘n Jam because it is a water-based gel and it’s gentle for all hair types. She sort of ignored what I told her and just said “that’s the product I use” and continued braiding.
In a hair braiding workshop I took, they discussed choosing the right products for your clients. The teacher specifically said that she favors Shine ‘n Jam because, since it’s water-based, it is suitable for all hair types. Although it’s gentle, it has excellent hold and helps you achieve beautiful results when styling.

Although my braider ignored my comment, I know choosing a stronger product for people with fine hair or processed hair can cause a lot of hair damage. I do not have processed hair, so I just trusted her (Spoiler alert: worst thing I ever did 😩).
After 4 hours, the braids looked great and I was very happy. 🙂The following day, I had my photo shoot and the braids looked extremely awesome in the pictures! I also got a lot of compliments!

However, that wasn’t the end of the story.
After 4 days of wearing my braids, my scalp was feeling very uncomfortable. It hurt a little. This had me worried because I always braid my own hair and my scalp never feels uncomfortable at all.
Also, I keep my braids for 4-6 weeks without any discomfort, and given that it’s only been 4 days since I got my braids, I started to feel anxious 😣
On Sunday, after I got out of work, I went to the Cheesecake Factory to have dinner with a friend. I mentioned to him that I wanted to take my braids down, but I wasn’t sure because it had only been 6 days since I got them and I paid $280. He tried to encourage me to continue to enjoy my hairstyle so it didn’t feel like a waste of money. Right after he said that, one of the waitresses told me she loved my braids. They kind of convinced me to keep my braids for longer.
That night after going to bed, I didn’t have a good sleep. Instead of forcing myself to sleep, I started reading and taking my braids down. Something really told me I needed to take them down!
The next morning, I noticed that my hair had way too much product buildup.

I washed my hair and OMG! This is where the crisis started! After washing my hair and coming out of the shower, my hair was extremely tangled and just very brittle. I have never seen my hair like this.

I bleached my hair a few years ago because I wanted to make it purple and bleaching is one of the most damaging processes to your hair. But not even bleaching caused as much damage as I’d just experienced! This was REALLY BAD!!!

I tried to detangle my hair as usual. As I was detangling it, my hair kept breaking. To sum up: half of my hair broke and fell out!

My hair had lost all its volume and it looked so skinny! The best thing I can say at this point is I STILL HAVE HAIR.

Desde que soy una niña he estado paranoica respecto a que otras personas me peinen. Mi mamá, que tiene el cabello lacio, era muy impaciente y no era del todo amable con mi cabello rizado. Así que muy pronto aprendí que yo debía hacerme cargo de la situación porque otras personas simplemente no podían. 😒
Así fue como comencé a trenzar mi propio cabello cuando solo tenía 8 años. Y también solía trenzar el cabello de mi hermano gemelo, ¡fue una práctica excelente! De cualquier modo, desde la infancia, he sido muy escéptica sobre a quién le confío mi cabello, así que siempre lo peino yo misma: puedo hacer mis propias box braids, puedo alisar mi cabello, hacerme tratamientos e incluso cortar mis propias puntas. No me gusta que la gente me toque el pelo, ¡y punto! Ojalá hubiera recordado esa lección, te cuento todo lo que ocurrió en este post.
La semana pasada tuve una sesión de fotos. Trabajo como trenzadora de cabello de miércoles a domingo y la sesión de fotos fue el martes. No quería pasar todo el lunes trenzando mi propio cabello, así que encontré una trenzadora para hacerlo (¡una parte de mí está enojada y quiere revelar su información para que todos sepan quién lo hizo! Pero sé que mis sentimientos de ira pasarán y me arrepentiré de haberlo hecho, ya que eso puede arruinar su reputación, ¡así que me voy a relajar por ahora! 😔😡)
Fui a mi cita, y ella fue muy amable y complaciente. Pasó buena música y me trenzó el cabello muy rápido. Una cosa que noté fue el producto que estaba usando. Usó KUUL FIX ME WAX GEL NATURAL LOOK. Aunque es suave, tiene una fijación excelente y te ayuda a lograr hermosos resultados al peinarte.
Aunque mi trenzadora ignoró mi comentario, sé que elegir un producto más fuerte para personas con cabello fino o cabello procesado puede causar mucho daño al cabello. No tengo cabello procesado, así que simplemente confié en ella (Alerta de spoiler: me iba a arrepentir 😩)
Después de 4 horas, las trenzas se veían geniales y yo estaba muy feliz 🙂 ¡Al día siguiente tuve mi sesión de fotos y las trenzas se ven totalmente increíbles en las fotos! ¡También recibí muchos elogios!
Sin embargo, la historia no terminó aquí.
Después de cuatro días de usar mis trenzas, mi cuero cabelludo se sentía muy incómodo. Me dolía un poco. Esto me preocupaba porque siempre trenzo mi propio cabello y mi cuero cabelludo nunca se siente incómodo.
Además, mantengo mis trenzas durante 4-6 semanas sin ninguna molestia, y dado que solo habían pasado cuatro días desde que me hice las trenzas, comencé a sentirme ansiosa 😣
El domingo, después de salir del trabajo, fui a cenar a Cheesecake Factory con un amigo. Le mencioné que quería quitarme las trenzas pero no estaba segura porque solo habían pasado 6 días desde que las compré y pagué $280. Él trató de animarme a seguir disfrutando de mi peinado para que no se sintiera como un desperdicio de dinero. Inmediatamente después dijo que uno de los camareros me dijo que le encantaban mis trenzas. Me convencieron de mantener mis trenzas por más tiempo.
Esa noche, después de acostarme, no lograba conciliar el sueño. En lugar de obligarme a dormir, comencé a leer y a quitarme las trenzas. ¡Algo realmente me dijo que necesitaba acabar con ellas!
A la mañana siguiente noté que mi cabello tenía demasiada acumulación de producto.
Me lavé el pelo y ¡Dios mío! ¡Aquí empezó la crisis! Después de lavarme el cabello y salir de la ducha, mi cabello estaba extremadamente enredado y muy quebradizo. Nunca me había visto el pelo así.
Decoloré mi cabello hace algunos años porque quería dejarlo morado y la decoloración es uno de los procesos más dañinos para tu cabello. ¡Pero ni siquiera la decoloración causa tanto daño como el que estoy experimentando ahora! ¡¡¡Esto está TREMENDAMENTE MAL!!!
Traté de desenredar mi cabello como de costumbre. Mientras lo desenredaba, mi cabello seguía rompiéndose. Para resumir: la mitad de mi cabello se rompió y se cayó.
¡Mi cabello ha perdido todo su volumen y se ve tan delgado! Lo mejor que puedo decir en este momento es que TODAVÍA TENGO PELO.
Lección: NO DEJES QUE TU TRENZADORA UTILICE CUALQUIER PRODUCTO EN TU CABELLO. RECOMIENDO USAR SHINE 'N JAM.
¡Me llevará algún tiempo recuperarme y hacer que mi afro vuelva a estar saludable! ¡Necesitaré mucha paciencia! ¡Deséenme la mejor de las suertes en el proceso! 🙏🏽
