Creating braids that look amazing is only a part of the braiding process. Another important part revolves around the products your braider uses. If you find a braider who can create beautiful braids, you are lucky! If you find a braider who also cares about your hair and uses products that promote your mane’s health, you are blessed! 🙏🏽 

Box braids, cornrows, twists, and locs are protective hairstyles, which means they should serve two purposes: 

1) Help your strands retain length and maintain moisture.

2)  Help you save time as they are low-maintenance and should last for several days (they can only last if you take care of them properly).

Here is a list of products you should bring to your braiding session or make sure your braider has. I choose these products because they give hydration, protection, and/or conditioning for my clients’ hair.

1. Detangling brush

Before braiding or creating any style, the first thing to do is to have your hair properly detangled. I still remember the pain I felt as a child when someone did this the wrong way! But detangling shouldn’t be a synonym for suffering. A proper detangling brush works through your hair knots instead of ripping your hair. The one I use is Scalpmaster Flexible Detangling Brush. This brush can flex, bend, and move with my clients' hair reducing its breakage and stress.

2. Detangling spray

Speaking of detangling your hair, using a detangling spray makes your hair more manageable and minimizes friction while brushing. My new favorite detangling spray is ion™ Color Defense™ Detangling Shine Mist. Although its description says it’s for color-treated hair, I find that it works fine on my hair as well as on my clients’ hair. Additionally, it adds shine without weighing hair down, leaving it greasy or oily-looking.

3. Oils

I really LOVE OILS! Properly chosen and applied, they make a great difference in your hairstyle's final outcome. There are many brands available, but I recently discovered this one called Olaplex which became very popular in the hair care world about 3 years ago. Before I blow dry my clients’ hair, I like to apply a few drops of Olaplex Nº.7 Bond Building Oil. This oil provides adequate heat protection (essential for enjoying beach days!) and increases hair shine and softness. 

4. Fast dryer

If you have curly hair and your braider needs to smooth your curls with a blow dryer before braiding, you want to minimize the amount of heat and manipulation being done to your hair so that it stays healthy and strong. Also, I don’t suggest rushing your braider, however, you don’t want your hair braiding session to take forever because of additional services you need aside from the braids themselves. 5. Shine ‘n Jam

Braiding gel is important for creating neat and long-lasting braided hairstyles. Less than two months ago I had a devastating hair braiding experience where I lost half of my hair because my braider used the wrong gel. In fact, she didn’t use gel, she used wax. If you see your braider trying to use wax in your hair, run! Seriously!

The best gel I’ve used is Shine 'n Jam Gel Acondicionador | Extra Hold. It’s a water-based conditioning gel that's suitable for all hair types, it provides a strong hold for your braids and it adds shine.

6. Mousse (optional)

Mousse is sometimes applied for additional moisture and control. Although this is optional, a lot of braiders like to add mousse when they finish braiding. The one I like to use is SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Smooth & Hold Multi-Styling Hair Mousse. All the other mousses I’ve seen are designed to provide volume or curl definition. This is the only mousse I know of that is specifically designed for braids, and that’s why I love this product. 

7. Shine Spray (optional)

Use a shine spray if you want an extra touch of radiance. I don’t have a favorite shine spray but the one I’ve used most recently is Creme of Nature Argan Oil From Morocco Moisturizing nourishing Sheen Hair Spray. This product adds a shine-enhancing effect to braids and it’s formulated with Argan oil which is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and fatty acids.

Crear trenzas que se vean increíbles es solo una parte del proceso de trenzado. Pero también deberías darle importancia a los productos que usa tu trenzador. Si encuentras un trenzador que pueda crear hermosas trenzas, ¡tienes suerte! Si encuentras un trenzador profesional que también se preocupa por tu cabello y usa productos que promueven la salud de tu melena, ¡debes sentirte bendecido! 🙏🏽

Las box braids, las cornrows, los twists y las rastas son estilos protectores, lo que significa que deben cumplir con dos propósitos:

1) Ayudan a que tus trenzas retengan la longitud y mantengan la humedad.

2) Te ayudan a ahorrar tiempo ya que son de bajo mantenimiento y deberían durar varios días (ten en cuenta que solo pueden durar si los cuidas adecuadamente).

Aquí hay una lista de productos que debes traer a tu sesión de trenzado o asegurarte de que tu trenzador los tenga. Elijo estos productos porque brindan hidratación, protección y/o acondicionamiento para el cabello de mis clientes.

1. Cepillo desenredante

Antes de trenzar o crear cualquier peinado, lo primero que debes hacer es tener el cabello bien desenredado. ¡Todavía recuerdo el dolor que sentía de niña cuando alguien hacía esto de manera incorrecta! Pero desenredar no debería ser sinónimo de sufrimiento. Un cepillo desenredante adecuado funciona trabajando con los nudos del cabello en lugar de rasgarlos. Para esto, yo uso el  Scalpmaster Flexible Detangling Brush. Este cepillo puede flexionarse, doblarse y moverse con el cabello de mis clientes, lo que reduce su rotura y estrés.

2. Spray desenredante

Y puesto que hablamos de desenredar tu cabello, un buen spray desenredante hace que tu cabello sea más manejable y minimiza la fricción durante el cepillado. Mi nuevo spray desenredante favorito es ion™ Color Defense™ Detangling Shine Mist.. Aunque su descripción dice que es para cabello teñido, encuentro que funciona bien tanto en mi cabello como en el de mis clientes. Además, aporta brillo sin apelmazar el cabello, y sin dejarlo grasiento o con aspecto aceitoso.

3. Aceites

¡De verdad que AMO LOS ACEITES! Escogidos y correctamente aplicados, marcan una gran diferencia en el resultado final de tu peinado. Hay muchas marcas disponibles, pero recientemente descubrí esta llamada Olaplex, que se hizo muy popular en el mundo del cuidado del cabello hace unos 3 años. Antes de secar el cabello de mis clientes, me gusta aplicar unas gotas de Olaplex Nº.7 Bond Building Oil. Este aceite proporciona una adecuada protección contra el calor (esencial para disfrutar a pleno de los días de playa) y aumenta el brillo y la suavidad del cabello.

4. Secador rápido

Si tienes cabello rizado y tu trenzador necesita suavizar tus rizos con un secador de cabello antes de trenzarlos, debes minimizar la cantidad de calor y la manipulación que se le hace a tu cabello para que se mantenga saludable y fuerte. Además, aunque te sugiero que te abstengas de apurar a su trenzador, no querrás que tu sesión de trenzado de cabello se demore para siempre debido a los servicios adicionales que necesitas además de las trenzas en sí. Estoy a punto de presentarles un dispositivo galardonado. ¿Listo? Aquí está: Revlon One-Step Volumizer Hair Dryer Brush. Este dispositivo ganó los premios Holy Grail Beauty Awards UK 2022 de Cosmopolitan. ¿Por qué deberías conseguirlo? Es asequible, funciona en todos los tipos de cabello de mis clientes (cabello rizado, ondulado y liso) y hace un trabajo rápido.

El gel para trenzas es importante para crear peinados trenzados prolijos y duraderos. Hace menos de dos meses tuve una experiencia de trenzado de cabello devastadora en la que perdí la mitad de mi cabello porque mi trenzadora usó el gel incorrecto. De hecho, no usó gel, usó cera. Si ves a tu trenzador tratando de aplicar cera en tu cabello, ¡corre! ¡Hablo en serio!

El mejor gel que he usado es Shine 'n Jam Gel Acondicionador | Extra Hold. Es un gel acondicionador a base de agua apto para todo tipo de cabello, proporciona una fuerte fijación a tus trenzas y aporta brillo.

6. Mousse (opcional)

La mousse se aplica a veces para humedad y control adicionales. Aunque es opcional, a muchos trenzadores les gusta agregar mousse cuando terminan de trenzar. La que me gusta usar es SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Smooth & Hold Multi-Styling Hair Mousse. Todas las demás mousses que he visto están diseñadas para proporcionar volumen o definición de rizos. Esta es la única mousse que conozco diseñada específicamente para trenzas, y por eso me encanta este producto.

7. Spray de brillo (opcional)

Usa un spray de brillo si quieres un toque extra de luminosidad. No tengo un spray de brillo favorito, pero el que he usado más recientemente es Creme of Nature Argan Oil From Morocco Moisturizing nourishing Sheen Hair Spray. Este producto agrega un efecto de realce del brillo a las trenzas y está formulado con aceite de Argán, que es rico en antioxidantes, vitaminas y ácidos grasos.
